This book grew from more than a decade of experiencing leadership built on clarity, trust, responsibility, and conviction.

I was given meaningful work, room to develop my own judgement, correction when I needed it, and support without having ownership taken away from me. Over time, those experiences changed how I understood leadership and what people need in order to grow.

Leadership is not about creating dependence on the leader. It is about giving people enough clarity to act, enough freedom to grow, enough correction to improve, and enough support to accept responsibility.

I did not always recognise those lessons while I was learning them. Their value became clearer as I encountered situations in which titles, authority, and leadership did not always mean the same thing.

This book distils those experiences into principles that can be used wherever leadership is required: at work, at home, in a community, among friends, or whenever someone chooses to accept responsibility for helping others move forward.

The setting changes. The responsibility does not.

Thank you, Richard Scott.
